Help is available for every question in the “Help Center” found on the top, right side of the web page.

  • If you are under 24 and your parent’s information is required, it is easy for your parent to start your FAFSA and you sign and submit it after your parent has signed and submitted it. (Both student and parents signature is required.)
  • If you filled out a 2023-2024 FAFSA, much of your information will be carried forward from last year. Review that information and update it as needed.
  • The IRS Tax Return Transcript Import feature (DDX) is now automatically used to add your tax information and /or parent’s tax information. Contributors must give their consent for their information to be directly imported into the FASFA application.
  • You will be required to provide an Official 2022 Tax Return Transcript or Non-filing Letter AND W2’s from the IRS for you and/or your parents Tax Return Transcript if the tax information isn’t pulled from the Tax import feature.
  • Once you are done entering all your information, be sure to sign and submit the form. You aren’t done until you reach the “Confirmation Page,” which you should read carefully and save for your records.

Professional Judgment

When there are unusual situations or special circumstances that impact your federal student aid eligibility, federal regulations give a financial aid administrator discretion or professional judgment on a case-by-case basis and with adequate documentation to make adjustments to the data elements on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form that impact your Student Aid Index (SAI) to gain a more accurate assessment of your family’s ability to contribute to your cost of education.

Special Circumstances refer to the financial situations (loss of a job, etc.) that justify an aid administrator adjusting data elements in the COA or in the SAI calculation.

Unusual Circumstances refer to the conditions that justify an aid administrator making an adjustment to a student’s dependency status based on a unique situation (e.g., human trafficking, refugee or asylum status, parental abandonment, incarceration), more commonly referred to as a dependency override.

Please contact a Financial Aid Advisor to discuss your unique situation to determine if you may be eligible for a professional judgement.

All professional judgments must include documentation and will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

It is the student’s responsibility to provide as much documentation as possible to qualify for a professional judgment.  All requests are required to be reviewed and approved by Financial Aid Officer, Financial Aid Coordinator and Administration.

Professional judgment requests are processed in the order they are received. Students will be notified via email or phone once a decision is made. There is no guarantee that this process will be completed prior to the end of registration period and applications must be approved to receive a deferment based on the finding.
