ABC Craft Competition: Forging the Future: Student Growth Through Skill, Competition, and Opportunity
The 2026 ABC National Craft Competition provided a valuable and enriching experience for participating students, highlighting not only individual achievement but also the broader impact of skilled trades on the community. Established in 1987, the National Craft Championships (NCC) are presented annually by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) to showcase the future of the construction industry. Lively Technical College was honored to participate in this important event for the second time with competitors in both Pipefitting and Welding. Craft trainees and apprentices from across the country travel to demonstrate their skills, training, and safe work practices while competing for top honors in their respective trades.

Through participation in this competition, students strengthened critical technical skills that directly contribute to building and maintaining safe, sustainable communities. Trades such as welding and pipefitting are essential across multiple industries, including construction, manufacturing, energy, shipbuilding, and infrastructure development. Skilled professionals in these fields play a vital role in everything from building bridges and schools to maintaining power plants and water systems.
These careers also offer strong earning potential and long-term stability. According to national workforce data, welders earn a median annual salary of approximately $50,000, with experienced professionals and those in specialized industries earning $60,000–$80,000 or more. Pipefitters and steamfitters often earn higher wages, with median salaries around $60,000–$70,000 and experienced workers exceeding $90,000 annually, particularly in industrial or union settings. In addition to competitive wages, these careers often provide benefits such as apprenticeships, certifications, and clear pathways for advancement without the need for a traditional four-year degree.

Katelyn Whitfield, who competed in Pipefitting, reflected on her experience, sharing, “Participating in the 2026 ABC National Craft Competition was an incredible experience. It allowed me to showcase my skills in blueprint reading and fabrication under strict time constraints. I would say it definitely sharpened those skills as well. The people involved were amazing, and I learned so much from my conversations.”

Jaden Peacock, who competed in Welding, also highlighted both the personal and professional growth he gained from the event. “My experience at the ABC Craft Competition was fun. I was nervous at first traveling and meeting new people, but it was worth it. It was exciting because I was able to try something new and do different things. While at ABC, I had the opportunity to connect with different companies, which helped with job opportunities and getting my name out there in the industry. Overall, my time at the ABC National Craft Competition was great, and I would love to experience it again one day.”
Overall, the competition not only enhanced students’ technical abilities and confidence but also reinforced the vital role skilled professionals play in supporting economic growth, infrastructure development, and the well-being of their communities. By developing expertise in high-demand trades like welding and pipefitting, these students are contributing to industries that are essential to daily life and are building careers that offer both financial stability and meaningful impact.
