Nelson Ezell Aviation Scholarship

Nelson was born on March 9, 1943 in Thomasville, Georgia to Robert and Hazel Morgan Ezell. He attended Taylor County Schools in Perry, FL. After honorably serving in the US Army from 1966-1968, he received his Airframe & Powerplant license from Lively Vocational Tech in Tallahassee, FL in June 1969. Nelson was later certified as an Inspection Authority. He developed his passion for aviation during A & P school at Lively Vocational Tech. In 1970, he founded Perry Aviation Service based at Perry-Foley airport, where he operated the FBO and performed maintenance on aircraft. Six years later, he built a hangar and airstrip and opened Ezell Airmotive, where he continued to work on aircraft and manufactured airboats with aircraft engines for recreational and commercial fishing. In 1986, Nelson and Dude founded Ezell Aviation, Inc., where he used his artistic talents to guide him through thirty-five years of warbird restoration and maintenance. In 2011, they expanded operations and services by launching Ezell Avionics, Inc. Running his businesses was a priority, but he took pleasure in mentoring young men who had a genuine interest in aviation. His network of friends, colleagues, and customers grew simply because he was a respectable, southern gentleman who had ambition for preserving aviation history. Nelson passed away on November 8, 2020. He was an inspiration to those who knew him, as well as those who knew of him. Nelson will be remembered as a generous and humble icon with a legacy that will continue to be revered for years to come.

Through the support of his family and friends, the Nelson Ezell Aviation Scholarship has been set up in his name to help offset the costs of FAA A&P Certification.

Eligibility:

A student that completes the aviation maintenance technician training from an (FAA approved FAR 147) AMT school such as Lively Technical College must take and pass the FAA General, Airframe and Powerplant written (knowledge) test. The written knowledge test minimum pass score is 70 percent for each subject area. Passing the written knowledge test is a prerequisite to then take the oral and practical test that must be taken with a FAA Designated Maintenance Examiner (DME). To receive a FAA Airframe & Powerplant certificate it is required to pass the written knowledge test for General, Airframe and Powerplant including passing an Oral and Practical test with a FAA DME to be issued a FAA Mechanic certificate. A student may take all testing required to receive a certificate for Airframe and Powerplant combined.  Or may elect to take testing for General and Airframe or General and Powerplant and be issued a certificate for only the Airframe or Powerplant separately. General Oral and Practical needs only to be taken once with Airframe or Powerplant.

Once the Airframe or Powerplant course is completed and a person is issued a FAA 147 Graduation certificate from Lively Technical College, any written test may be taken at a designated FAA Testing Center, to include the Lively Technical College Testing Center.

Based on the combined AVERAGE of a student’s FAA General, Airframe and or Powerplant written test, students will be eligible for the Nelson Ezell Scholarship funds to be applied to their Oral and Practical Exams. This will apply only if the exams are taken through Lively Technical College and can only be applied to graduating students of Lively Technical College.

The Oral & Practical must be taken within 120 days from completion of Airframe or Powerplant program.

Combined Average of a Student’s FAA General, Airframe and/or Powerplant Written Test Awarded Funds
70-84% 75% of the cost of any FAA Exam
85% or higher 100% of the cost of any FAA Exam
