Program Content / Objectives

The Web Design Services program offers self-paced, hands-on instruction in the latest technical skills to individuals who are training for careers in the field of Web design. The curriculum emphasizes the development of standards-compliant Web sites that adhere to principles of effective visual design, usability, cross-browser compatibility, and accessibility. Using current industry-standard software products, students practice the skills necessary to obtain entry-level positions in the field. Over the course of the program, each student creates a number of projects that serve as a portfolio of work that may be presented to prospective employers.

Current curriculum topics include:

  • principles of effective Web site design
  • HTML and XHTML hand coding
  • Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
  • Macromedia Dreamweaver 8
  • Adobe Photoshop CS
  • JavaScript
  • database design fundamentals
  • introduction to Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • introduction to ColdFusion MX Web application development
  • Macromedia Flash

Specific Program Entrance Recommendations - The ability to apply logical thinking to problem solving is critical to one’s success in this field. Students should also possess excellent reading skills, as the Web design profession requires one to read and comprehend a large volume of technical material. Creativity and artistic ability are also essential. Students entering the Web Design Services program should meet at least one of the following criteria: hold a 2-year college degree (AA or AS) or higher; have passed the CLAST test; or have scored (without remediation) at least 9.0 on each subsection of the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). All prospective students must interview with an instructor prior to enrollment. A distance learning enrollment option is available on a limited basis to students who meet certain prerequisites.
