FLORIDA MOTORCYCLE LAW

Florida Law requires as of July 1, 2008, per s. 322.12(5)(a), F.S., every first-time applicant (regardless of age) for licensure to operate a motorcycle must provide proof of completion of a motorcycle safety course before the applicant may be licensed to operate a motorcycle. Riding a motorcycle without the endorsement is a criminal violation.

COURSE INFORMATION

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Basic Rider Course offers instruction for beginning riders 15-½ years and older. The basic rider’s course is offered to those with no riding experience at all and/or novice riders to include long-time riders. The course covers the basic fundamentals for you to develop your capabilities to become a safe and responsible motorcyclist. It provides the opportunity for you to learn the physical and mental skills important for operating a motorcycle. In the classroom, you will learn ways to minimize risk and handle special riding situations. During the riding portions of the basic rider’s course you will be coached to develop the physical skills of basic control that include: clutch/throttle control, straight-line riding, turning and shifting, and then move on to the more advanced skills to include stopping quickly, cornering and swerving.

The course concludes with a knowledge test and a skill evaluation.  Students meeting all requirements will receive a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Completion Card.

Motorcycles and helmets are furnished.  Students must have proper riding gear for all range exercises.  This includes:  full fingered gloves (preferably leather),  eye protection (glasses or goggles), long, non-flare denim pants, or material of equivalent or better durability, long sleeve shirt or jacket, rain suit (rain protection; classes can be conducted in light rain), over-the-ankle footwear (sturdy, not cloth, canvas, etc.).  It is recommended that students bring lunch.  Light colored, loose fitting clothing and high energy beverages are beneficial during hot weather months; and layered clothing for winter months.
